apple fruit
An apple
fruit consists of 2–5
carpels which are
not fused with each other, but with the inner wall of the pitcher-shaped flower-axis. The
floral-axis (base of the
flower) of apple
fruits enlarges during
fruit maturity, becomes fleshy and then encloses the
carpels which form the core of the apple-fruit. The
pulp is developing from the
floral-axis (base of the
flower), while the
carpels form the core (e. g. in
Malus domestica – Apple,
Pyrus communis – Pear,
Sorbus aucuparia – White Beam and other Rosaceae – Rose
family members).
