floral-axis
The floral-axis (base of the
flower) is the section of the
stem above the
pedicel at which the
flower-leaves are inserted. In most
species, the floral-axis is very short and hardly discernible. Only in some
species it is notable broadened or prolonged (e. g. in
Myosurus minimus – Mousetail). A pitcher-shaped or tubular floral-axis is referred to as a
hypanthium,
floral cup, or
floral tube (e. g. in
Epilobium – Willowherb).
