The term 'genus' is used in plant systematics to describe a very closely related monophyletic group, e. g. Quercus – Oak Trees). Superior to 'genus' is 'family', subordinate is 'species'. The name of the genus builds the first part of a scientific species name according to the binary nomenclature, e. g. in Quercus petraea – Sessile Oak).
