vernation
The term 'vernation' refers to the shape of the cross-section of juvenile
leaves, especially in
buds. It is an important vegetative identification character in the Poaceae – Grasses and may be examined best at
innovation shoots. The main differentiation is between rolled vernation (e. g. in
Bromus hordeaceus – Soft-brome) and folded vernation (e. g. in
Dactylis glomerata – Cocksfoot).
