montane zone
The montane zone is the
altitudinal level of the highlands in which naturally forests dominate. In Central European low mountain ranges, it occurs from appr. 300 to 1500 m a. s. l. (in Scandinavia at even lower altitudes) and range from appr. 700 to 1850 m a. s. l. in the Alps.
