cone axis

The cone axis is the woody main axis of the cones, especially in Conifers. In Abies – Fir, the cone axis remains erect at the tree, because the seed-scales dissolve at fruit maturity. In most other Conifers (e. g. in Picea – Spruce), the seed-scales do not dissolve from the cone axis and the cones fall off as whole unit.
