The term 'bud' refers to the juvenile state of shoots. In buds, longitudinal growth is surpressed. However, leaves (or bud-scales) are often developed and protect the meristem at the apex. Depending on function and location, reproductive buds, perennating buds, axillary buds and terminal buds may be distinguished.
