elaiosome

An elaiosome is a fleshy nutrient-rich (frequently fatty) appendage of seeds which serves as a bait for ants that feed on the elaiosome and thereby disperse the seeds (e. g. in many Viola – Violet or Euphorbia – Spurge species).
