indehiscent fruit
In an indehiscent
fruit, the
seeds are surrounded by a dry and hard, vellum-like or lignified
pericarp. The
fruit remains closed at maturity and the
seeds are not released. It can be, among other,
berries (e. g. in
Vaccinium – Blueberry),
drupes (e. g. in
Prunus – Plum),
nuts (e. g. in
Quercus – Oak Tree),
nutlets (e. g. in
Ranunculus – Buttercup),
achenes (e. g. in
Ambrosia – Ragweed and other Asteraceae – Daisy
family members) and
caryopses (e. g. in
Setaria – Bristlegrass and other Poaceae – Grasses).
